Champagne sailing on the way to Mag Bay
23 Nov - With little more to be offered by Turtle bay, we decided, with a pleasant weather window, to head on today. Leaving around 08:30 we motored out until, about 10 miles offshore, we picked up a gentle breeze from behind which was enough to keep the sail filled. With the Genoa poled out we coasted along at a regal 3 knots in lovely sunny weather for the rest of the day. As the night wore on we changed the sail plan and the wind increased to a steady twenty knots which had us covering the miles well
24 Nov - A Day of sailing. Through the night and into the morning the wind kept coming and we kept sailing. By the end of a wonderfully sunny and continuously windy day we were well on our way to reaching Mag Bay the following day, ahead of schedule.
25 Nov - We sailed on through the night but by 02:30 the wind had changed direction. Instead of another sail change we decided it was high time to motor in from here and so we put away the sails and started up the iron Genny to make sure we had plenty of water and power when we got to our new anchorage. We turned the corner of the bay around 11:00 and to our happy surprise there were six other sailboats already anchored. In calm sunny weather we dropped the hook and set ourselves up for a long stay in these beautiful surroundings. As we were setting up a fellow boaty came past, Alex from Hepatica - he was on his way to a surfing hotspot and wanted to know whether we wanted to go with him. We declined this invitation but did ask whether he and Laura, his girlfriend would like to come over for sundowners which they did. A great couple they had left Nanaimo in September and were planning a similar itinerary to us so we may be crossing paths again with them in the future. Of the other 6 boats in the anchorage there was quite the Canada contingent with 4 from Vancouver/Victoria as well as one from Germany and one from the US
26 Nov - Woke
to a stunning still morning with bright sunshine. After a leisurely breakfast and some
unsuccessful attempts at fishing one of the local panga's came by and offered
us a huge lobster but we didn't have the right change so had to decline. Around 10:00 we then we jumped in the dinghy
and went exploring. First challenge was
getting through the breakers on the way in.
We didn't do too bad for a first attempt only shipping a bit of
water. We were then close in to the
small fishing camp where the locals processed their catch. Passing close by we then went exploring our
first mangrove swamp trying to work out whether they had alligators in these
swamps! Once we tired of poking around
the mangroves we headed to the beach for a pleasant walk in the sand before
heading back to the boat for lunch and and afternoon of bread making and
washing (our clothes were starting to get a little stinky!)
