A false start to heading south
12 Nov - This was the day we were finally meant to say Adios to Ensenada and start heading south again before winter fully arrives here. We were all packed up and ready to go by 09:45 and pulled out of the slip into sunny, if hazy weather. Leaving the lee of the harbour the weather brightened more and, in a gentle swell, we set course for the south. All was going peachy until after about an hour the motor stuttered again…and then finally died! I guess we still hadn't got to the bottom of our fuel issue.
With a fair wind we set the sails and Heidi started back towards the harbour whilst also informing the harbormaster what was happening. As ever, I was hoping that the wind would stay light and so I would have time to figure out what was wrong and we could get the engine started again rather than having to sail into port. No chance though, the wind picked up to a wonderful 10 - 12 knots and she sailed at full speed back to the harbour, with Heidi trying her best to slow her down! We decided to anchor outside the port and then we both set too to clear the blockage and get the engine going again.
We eventually found a big clot just before the primary fuel filter but only after taking off the only ports into the fuel tank to find lots more crud. At least it was a conclusive result for this blockage Once we had bled the fuel system we were then good to motor back into our old slip at cruiseport - and all before lunch! After a bite to eat we confirmed we could stay and then started working out if we could find anyone to clean both the fuel (we had a full tank as we were planning to set off for a long stretch) as well as clean the tank. Amazingly we found an engineer working on Matt and Lisa's boat that not only was set up to do the work, but could get it done before the weekend. With that plan in place we extended our stay until Saturday and then had a quiet night regrouping
13 Nov - This morning we got up, moved everything out of the way for the team and waited for them to turn up at 10. at 10:30 (mexico time!) they arrived but quickly made up by having the tank drained into a 55 gallon drum (through filters) and the tank removed from the boat before lunch. (They decided that it would be easier to add the access ports and clean the tank in the shop). In the afternoon we took some time to go through our massive stack of tools and spares before heading into town to see the entertainments around the Baja 1000 which starts tonight at midnight
14 Nov - (from memory as we haven't got any detailed recollection of this) The morning was spent getting in last minute supplies and waiting for the team to turn up with the fuel tank. The arrived around midday and by 15:00 the engine was purring again. They showed us some video of the inside of the tank and it was truly filthy - really glad we had got this done.
15 Nov - Clearly an uneventful day as neither Heidi nor I can remember anything about it!!
