The next leg - long pushes north
Refreshed and ready for the next stage of the journey, our next aim was to get up to Campbell River. With few good spots to stop we knew these were going to be long days but crossing and recrossing the northern end of the straits of Georgia
Our first leg took us across to Lasqueti Island. After an early start we navigated up past Newcastle island emerging into the ominous sounding Departure Bay as float planes landed near us and we dodged the Vancouver ferries coming and going. As we left the harbour we picked up a great north westerly providing fantastic sailing for all of 45 minutes before it died then we were back to motoring on towards Lasqueti Island. An uneventful motor through rolly swell got us into False Bay around 2pm. AS soon as we were settled we headed round to the hotel for a beer and a shower (!) The showers were not working but the beer was wonderful. Whilst there we got talking to some of the locals. Jonathan had been on the island for 28 years and proudly stated he'd only left twice in that time. Sitting there with his Santa Claus beard and long grey hair he proudly stated that on his last trip off the island he had a hair cut, but had made a decision that he wasn't planning on leaving the island and cutting his hair again.... ever!
Lasqueti was the first place where we started to understand the meaning of 'island life'; a place where time is flexible and the rest of the world was definitely ' a world away'
