Admin days in Cadboro bay
31 May - Woke to flat calm and pouring rain. In the morning we worked through our to do lists we had both been compiling and worked out how we would tackle the list of items. In the afternoon the wind freshened with gusts getting up to about 20 knots and so we spoke to foreshore again to confirm that the bouy would be ok to hold . Thankfully we were informed it had been checked only last week and should be fine!
Once the rain cleared in the afternoon we headed into town to fill up propane, do some Canadian Tire shopping (!) and stock up food for the next week. We also popped into to see Janet and Darryl back in the inner harbour to catch up.
01 June - Quiet sunday on the boat - a bit of cleaning was the extent of progress today. Also planning for the next week of activity on final jobs
02 June - The water maker works! - This was the last piece of equipment we had not tested. After a couple of scary leaks whe we initially switched it on, and some sage advice and counceling from Darryl, we got it all working. Now just need to get some filters and test kits and we can make our own water!
03 June - mast day today - we makred the reef points on the lines and took down the mainsail in the morning in preparation for redrilling some holes in the mast for the inspection plates.. In the afternoon we headed into town to do a Trotac run (our local chandlery) as well as a couple of other things we needed
04 June - Is our boat sinking?? Started well with putting the mainsail back on, fixing the inspection ports, chekcing how the gusher pump worked (a manual bilge pump if it all goes horribly wrong) and working out what oils we had on board for servicing. Around lunch time though the automatic bilge pump kicked in and kept going - major panic - there is water coming into the boat somewhere !!! We closed all the sea cocks and this didn't stop anything, after staring at each other blank faced we decided to at least get the boat to the dock (so if she sank we would be able to find her. On starting the engine the bilge pump stopped though - water had stopped coming on. When we got to the dock there was still no water so what had happened ? We started taking the boat apart, going through all the fresh water systems looking for the leak but no joy. so we kept looking (a random leak is the worst kind) Around 3 we worked out that what had been happening was the the bilge pump kicked in, but then when it stopped, the water was backflowing into the bilge setting it off again - on stripping downt he bilge pum pthere was a sliver of wood holding the check valve open - problem solved. We were back on the bouy by 5 but after a big scare!
05 June - Shopping! - had a very productive day getting material for lea cloth, oils and filters and outfits for Heidi for Oakley's graduations and beyond.
06 June - Stitch and bitch session. Worked on our sunshade (cut down Genoa) and Lee Cloth. Also got all the oils and filters to service the engine(s)
07 June - Sextant course. Learned how to take a MerPass site of the sun at midday to determine our position
08 June - Anchor check and boat cleaning..
