The start of the big adventure
So this morning was the big day that we leave Victoria for 3 months. The sun shone as we packed the last of our bits and pieces into the boat and then we slipped our moorings and where off. Just past laurel pint we met Joanne from Wharf Street out with a group of kayakers. She waved and asked where we were heading, we replied, 'round the island - see you in September' and she waved frantically and wished us the best of luck. On the way out we took some video of the harbour ‘to remind ourselves of DT’s home port' and Benjy waved a fond farewell. Then we turned the corner of the breakwater and we were off. The run down to trial island as ever was a breeze helped along by the current. We turned in down the west side of Discovery trying to track the currents but as ever were confounded by the shifting flows. We crawled out of Baynes channel and in up the coast for the next 90 minutes against the current until finally getting north of and once again picking up some helping current getting us into Sidney spit in just under 6 hours. With the rainy forecast it was pretty empty and we easily found a spare public buoy to hook onto. Heidi did a beautiful job of driving up to the mark and then we turned the engine off and kicked back. Dinner was a fairly makeshift affair of burnt offering beef burgers (trying to relearn the barbecue) and potato salad and then a quiet evening as we settled in. This is the first time monitoring our power consumption on the batteries too and we are both totally flummoxed by how the battery power fluctuates. I guess we’ll find out soon enough!
