Broughton Island Grand Tour - Part Three
Leaving Greenway sound we kept progressing clockwise around Broughton Island heading for Simoon Sound. As we got into the main channel the wind freshened and with full sails we cruised around through intermittent rain showers and into the sound, a truly spectacular location. We tucked in amongst the outcrops and then got the shelter up - only just in time though as the heavens then opened! It was great sitting out under the shelter listening to the falling rain and soaking up the atmosphere.
After a very rainy night it cleared up in the morning and we spent a good few hours kayaking around and soaking up the views.
After lunch we headed out to Echo Bay Marina where we could restock with basic supplies.
In Port MacNeil we had picked up a local book "Full Moon, Flood Tide" written by Bill Proctor; an old timer who had lived his entire life in and around the Broughton's. This had become our bible for exploring the area as Bill's memories recorded anecdotes and stories for every nook and cranny of the archipelago along with tails of the colourful characters that had lived there. On the book jacket it had mentioned that 'you can still find Bill, sat outside his cabin, which is now a museum, if you are lucky enough get to Echo Bay'. We set off in search of this mythical place and sure enough, we found Bill, now well into his 70's outside his cabin, holding court with us few hardy souls who had made the pilgrimage to see him!
