Making Progress to Berkeley Sound
We planned to leave Port Renfrew together early next morning and woke to a dank overcast day. Leaving the breakwater we could see the fog closing in at the end of the channel and realized this was going to be a great day to test the radar and AIS!. We headed into the fog and spent the next few hours in calm seas working up the coast, just keeping the coast in sight through the fog. As we went along Cora Jane drifted in and out of the fog and it was reassuring to be able to see her on AIS as well as radar. In addition we got to get confident with spotting the many fishing boats that plied these waters on the radar. As we progressed up the coast the fog thinned from above, giving us first blue sky and then eventually totally dissipating. With 10 to 15 knots mostly on the nose there wasn’t much sailing until we rounded the point into Berkeley sound were we were able to put up full sail and with 12 knots of wind go on a lovely reach up to the Effingham islands in spectacular weather. Pulling into Effingham cove there was only one other boat there and so we had plenty of room to find the perfect spot lining ourselves up with the channel for sunset.
